Fascinatin’ Rhythm

This full-scale version of the Gershwin classic was arranged for the City of Glasgow Wind Orchestra by Alan Kitchen, and received it’s world premier on the 11th May 2018 in Glasgow.

It is written for a large Concert Band, and requires strength in depth in every section. Running time is around 6 minutes, and during that time you are taken through various solo sections and section solos. After a dramatic opening, it begins quietly with a solo E Clarinet and Flute section. The rhythm starts on the Baritone Sax and builds up to the entrance of the main tune in the Sax and Clarinet sections. We then go through various styles, including solos for the Bass Trombone, Trumpet, Horn and Trombone sections, all the time picking up the tempo and excitement, until we reach a frantic climax. It really is a roller-coaster ride for band and audience alike.

The recording below is a digital version using the sounds from Sibelius software, but it gives you a good impression of the energy and technical requirements involved in this fantastic arrangement.
